What happens when a fifteen-year-old and a married man fall in love with a widowed grade school teacher? Rushmore.
Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman) plays a barber’s son who gets into a prestigious school, Rushmore, because of a one-man play he wrote. Max is revered and admired by many of his fellow students, who aren’t exactly sure what to make of him. He befriends Herman Blume (Bill Murray), a wealthy local that takes an interest in the eccentric young man. Both Max and Blume fall for a beautiful schoolteacher, Rosemary Cross (Olivia Williams). Ms. Cross is intrigued by Max, but finds Blume more desirable.
Max gets kicked out of Rushmore due to poor academics, which result from his being a part of too many extra-curricular activities related to his academics. Max loses his first love, Rushmore. And it is war when he finds out that Blume has stolen his second love and the new focus of his life, Cross.
The war between Max and Blume brings some of the movie’s best laughs. It ends on a high note and will have you smiling from cheek to cheek. Rushmore is fresh and intelligent, and it keeps you guessing. It’s not going to go down as an epic, but it’s definitely worth watching.
