Point Pleasant: The Complete Series

Point Pleasant
Cast: Elisabeth Harnois
Studio: Fox
Rating: 3/10

CORPORATE LINE: Cancelled before the first season was over, POINT PLEASANT nonetheless enjoys a strong cult following, taking its place among supernatural dramas like ROSWELL and TRUE CALLING. Christina (Elisabeth Harnois) is discovered alone and lost on the beach in Point Pleasant by lifeguard Jesse Parker (Sam Page), and is taken to the home of Dr. Ben Kramer (Richard Burgi), whose family takes the girl in. Christina has come to town in search of clues to her past, and to the mother she never knew, who was a native of Point Pleasant. As Christina learns of her supernatural origins, tensions among the townspeople mount, and it becomes clear that the newcomer has powers she doesn’t know how to control. Jesse finds himself drawn to her, while his girlfriend, Paula (Cameron Richardson), grows ever more jealous–and Jesse’s best friend, Terry (Brent Weber), further complicates matters with his secret feelings for Paula. The arrival of Lucas Boyd (Grant Show, MELROSE PLACE) reveals further intimations of secrets kept, including those of Ben Kramer himself.

THE SHOW: When Point Pleasant hit the airwaves I was there. I was ready to embark on more shows about the supernatural. It didn’t take long to tune out. After a few episodes I’d had enough. Nothing about Point Pleasant made any viewer believe the show was there for the long haul. It felt like Buffy meets Dawson’s Creek without the creepiness of Buffy or the cute characters of Dawson’s Creek.

You’d expect a girl that is supposed to be the daughter of the Devil to be scary. Instead it was pedestrian. The characters are boring. When a show is developed and the entire life of the program falls upon characters you never care about it’s over.

Again, the fact that you have the Devil’s daughter sitting there doing nothing exciting you wonder “when is this going to get cool?” And then another episode goes by. Then another and so on until it becomes apparent it’s never getting any better.

THE EXTRAS: The making of extra is as dull as the show itself. It’s a complete fluff piece that was certainly made to sell the show. It’s a little to late here.

FRANKLY: After suffering through thirteen episodes the verdict is in; good riddance to Point Pleasant.
