Madonna is a star. In music, that is. Film is another story altogether. In her latest effort, The Next Best Thing, she is as close to mediocrity as you’ll ever find her. In her defense, however, the entire film is on the same level, so let’s not make Madonna the scapegoat.
The Next Best Thing is a simple story about two best friends, Abbie (Madonna) and Robert (Rupert Everett), who share a lot in common, including terrible luck for finding love. Abbie and Robert are like peanut butter and jelly and would make the perfect couple, but Robert is gay. What happens next is a twist that finds them in bed one moment and parents the next. There are conflicts that come into play and break apart what seemed to be the next best thing at the time.
The film has a weak script. There is no doubt about that. It’s full of cliches and bland characters. The plot is good, but shallow. There was lots of ground that could have been covered but they get absolutely nowhere. The most important ingredient for a film like this would be to fall in love with the characters. You won’t. And you certainly won’t recommend this to your friends.
