The Original Kings Of Comedy

The Original Kings Of Comedy
Cast: Steve Harvey
Studio: Paramount
Rating: 9/10

Recorded live at the Charlotte Coliseum in Charlotte, N.C., The Original Kings Of Comedy is a glimpse into the successful road show entitled The Kings Of Comedy. This film focuses on four comedians: the host Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley, Cedric “The Entertainer”, and Bernie Mac.

The film or documentary, whatever you care to call it, was directed by Spike Lee. Although no direction was needed, it was Spike’s vision that brought this great group of talent to the screen.

I came in with the feeling that I would be entertained, but I had no idea that within minutes I’d be laughing so hard my jaw ached and belly would ache. Steve Harvey starts the comedic onslaught. The star of his own TV show, many comedy specials, and winner of numerous awards, you soon find that onstage Steve Harvey is even funnier than you may have ever imagined. Harvey never wavers as he moves with ease from one topic to the next. His Titanic bit had the audience both onscreen and off standing and clapping while gasping for air. Then there is his relentless interaction with the crowd. From singing along with Earth, Wind, & Fire while discussing what is wrong with music today to borrowing an audience member’s jacket because he left during his routine, you couldn’t help but get the feeling that Steve Harvey was truly enjoying himself. It showed. The laughter at the screening was so loud that often we’d miss the next couple of lines, which means this will definitely be a must buy when it’s available on video.

Next onstage was D.L. Hughley. You probably know him best from his hit television show, The Hughleys. His routine was outstanding as well. His observations about life, relationships, and the crowd tore me apart piece by piece. It’s apparent why this guy deserved a television show all of his own. His wit was sharp and his tongue was sharper.

With a tough act to follow, Cedric “The Entertainer” was next on the block. He came out with a wildly funny observation on gangs today and those of yesteryear. I’ll only mention it has something to do with break dancing. And when you see Cedric get down, you quickly understand that words aren’t the only reason he got his nickname, “The Entertainer”.

After all was said and done, it was Bernie Mac who wrapped it up in a bow. Mac came out with guns ablaze. First he talked about kids today. Mac leaves no punches cocked; he throws and throws until you are down for the count. His “sum-on-a-bitch” lines are too much. Mac is brutally honest and observant. And just when you thought it was over, he brought his bedroom into play. As if talking about his three-minute orgasms weren’t enough, he can’t resist talking about grandparents and “niagra”, his observance on the elderly pronunciation of Viagra.

But wait. Don’t leave the show too quickly. You have to stick around and see what basketball players these four comedians compare themselves to and why. It’s short, but so sweet.

The Kings Of Comedy has gone virtually under the radar since 1997. It was out there every night, living only in the minds of those who attended. Spike Lee had a vision, and that was to mark in time this great comedic tour. We’ve had great films in the past, like Eddie Murphy’s Delirious and Richard Pryor’s Live On The Sunset Strip, but bringing these four heavyweights in one package is unforgettable.
