Pierce Brosnan has a lot to live up to. After all, his predecessors include Sean Connery. But Brosnan has played 007 before. The World Is Not Enough is as action packed as any Bond flick you’ve seen before, and it is just as far-fetched. But Bond is supposed to be far-fetched. I mean, we all want to be that hunky spy who gets all the women. Right? Haven’t you dreamt it yourself? I’m speaking mostly to those of you who carry a Y in their chromosomes.
I first looked for the gadgets: the cars, the places he hides his weapons, and eyeglasses that can shoot some sort of death ray. Well, actually I wanted to see the sexy Bond girls. How lucky was I when Bond’s sunglasses gave him x-ray vision? You see a lot, but enough about that. This review is getting a bit sexist, but Bond has always been geared toward males. What do you expect?
I almost forgot the film has a plot. The story finds James Bond protecting Sophie Marceau, a sexy heir to an oil tycoon. A terrorist is looking to put a halt on the building of an oil pipeline across the Middle East. Denise Richards doubles as a nuclear scientist and Bond girl. You thought Pussy Galore was a great name, well Richards’ screen name, Christmas, is just plain silly. It’s good for a few laughs at the end. Bond asks, “I thought Christmas only comes once a year?” So, my sexist tone isn’t off the beaten path.
Overall, the film has a few one liners that are dry and don’t go over very well, but luckily this isn’t a comedy. The special effects are grand and the script has a few very predictable turns, but most of the time I was entertained. So entertained that I didn’t even realize the film ran over two hours.
