World Poker Tour
Cast: Reality Series
Studio: Shout!
Rating: 7/10

CORPORATE LINE: World Poker Tour created a televised sports sensation and fueled the current poker explosion. An estimated 60 million people in the U.S. now play and poker’s popularity continues to skyrocket.

Bringing the heat to DVD, World Poker Tour Season Two is an eight-DVD set stacked with cunning poker stars, fierce competition and record-breaking prize pools. Tournaments are set in some of the world’s most glamorous locations. With millions at stake, each of the 14 episodes offers skilled card playing and action on the felt. The box set also features an entire disc filled with bonus material.

THE SHOW: Honestly this is the first time I’ve watched poker on television. It never quite appealed to my viewing tastes because I never understood why someone would want to watch people playing cards on television.

After watching the second season it makes sense. People watch Survivor because we believe we could win because the competitors are regular guys and girls. The World Poker Tour is the same. You watch and wonder if you couldn’t compete and take home the big bucks.

Each show helps initiate the uninitiated poker players by getting us inside the action and why and what is happening. The announcers teach viewers poker lingo so we don’t feel out of the loop. You watch and get addicted immediately. There are some real moments were you are nervous and completely caught up in the action. That’s the truest test of a reality show. Because the individuals on the show are interesting viewers become invested in their journey—adding to the addiction.

DVD FEATURES: You can learn how to play No Limit Texas Hold ‘Em. Great bonuses as most of those who watch invest so much in the show leading to an interest in playing.

The featurettes range from a couple minute promo with the stars who talk about poker. A great featurette recaps the final championship and breaks it down; the good and the bad. A profile is also included discussing the real stars of the show.

FRANKLY: You don’t have to be a poker fan or even know how to play in order to thoroughly enjoy the World Poker Tour. I was as surprised as anyone that I couldn’t tear myself away until the end.
