Vanilla Sky has a lot going for it. Great actors like Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz and a pretty good director in Cameron Crowe. But was this remake better to have just been given the Crouching Tiger treatment and dubbed for English?
David Aames (Tom Cruise) appears to lead a charmed life. Handsome, wealthy and charismatic, the young New York City publishing executive’s freewheeling existence is enchanting, yet he seems to be missing something. Then, in one night David meets Sofia (Penelope Cruz), the girl of his dreams, but loses her by making a small mistake. Thrust unexpectedly onto a roller-coaster ride of romance, comedy, suspicion, love, sex and dreams, David finds himself on a mind-bending search for his soul and discovers the precious, ephemeral nature of true love.
The most glaring problems with this film is its entirely too faithful to the original film Abre Los Ojos. Crowe follows it so close its almost color by numbers. Where is the fun in that? Crowe even occasionally overwrites dialogue instead of just letting it play itself out.
This is a film we’ve seemed to see Cruise do before. Also pretty being humbled. It’s almost nauseating at this point. Crowe is usually much sharper, but here he doesn’t produce a product that is better than what is out there. The only standout is Jason Lee. Aside from that I believe that you’re better off getting a copy of Abre Los Ojos and a translator.
