Little Black Book

Little Black Book
Cast: Brittany Murphy, Ron Livingston, Kathy Bates, Holly Hunter, Rashida Jones
Studio: Revolution
Rating: 5/10

CORPORATE LINE: A dark comedy about new boyfriends, ex-girlfriends and little black books. In Little Black Book, Stacy Holt, an associated producer for daytime talk show hostess Kippie Kann, is frustrated when her boyfriend Derek refuses to discuss his past relationships. With the encouragement of her co-worker Barb, she delves into his Palm to learn about his ex-girlfriends. Using the show as a ruse and Barb as her guide, Stacy interviews and befriends them, only to discover that the past, in a few instances, is rather present. A modern day immorality tale of snooping in the electronic age, Little Black Book as the question: have you ever been tempted to go where you shouldn’t, and look inside his little black book?

THE GOOD: Brittany Murphy is the only reason to watch as she delivers a fantastic performance even though the script is below the level.

THE BAD: The premise has a lot of promise until it gets mixed up in a mock Jerry Springer done by Kathy Bates and an entire cast, including Holly Hunter, who do very little to support Murphy. The premise of a woman who wants to meet her boyfriends ex’s to see why he left is quite a good idea. The execution on the other hand is far from good.

The biggest problem comes from the many stale jokes. You find yourself laughing in embarrassment but for who? Murphy mostly. You can almost feel yourself cringe as she tries her damndest to make a go at material that is sub-par.

FRANKLY: Little Black Book is essentially two movies that have been taped together—one about Springer and another about a woman who wants to meet and figure out her boyfriends ex’s. Done right both could have been fun to watch, however together its not even as much fun as an hour with Jerry, Jerry, Jerry.
