CORPORATE LINE: LORD OF WAR is an action adventure story set in the world of international arms dealing.
The film, based on fact, follows the globetrotting exploits of arms dealer Yuri Orlov (NICOLAS CAGE). Through some of the deadliest war zones, Yuri struggles to stay one step ahead of a relentless Interpol agent (ETHAN HAWKE), his business rivals, even some of his customers who include many of the world’s most notorious dictators. Finally, Yuri must also face his own conscience.
THE MOVIE: Depending on the kinds of movies you enjoy will certainly influence whether you’ll love or hate Lord of War. It’s a dark satire about international gun trade. If you like satires then you’ll absolutely love this movie. But exiting the theater it seemed that those who liked it was a 50/50 proposition.
Director Andrew Niccol says it’s based on actual events and that is a bit scary. No one will be surprised that Nicolas Cage is the perfect anti-hero, Yuri. Cage absorbs the character to the point that you couldn’t imagine anyone else in the role. Although the narration is often interesting it often becomes too much—it gets to the point where you wonder if you’re watching a movie or listening to a book on tape.
The cast isn’t bad but they are overshadowed by Nicolas Cage. Cage is fantastic and its apparent Lord of War wouldn’t be nearly as interesting without him. Another highlight is the film settings; New York City, South Africa, and the Czech Republic.
FRANKLY: Lord of War isn’t a perfect movie. Certainly gun running would be a great documentary topic. In fact if any documentary directors are out there reading this please make a movie about this. I’d pay to see it! Until then Lord of War will certainly do.
