Kill Bill: Volume 1

Kill Bill: Volume 1
Cast: Uma Thurman, David Carradine, Lucy Liu
Studio: Miramax
Rating: 5.5/10

Corporate Line: Uma Thurman is going to KILL BILL, in Quentin Tarantino’s latest film about a former assassin betrayed by her boss, Bill (David Carradine). Four years after surviving a bullet in the head, the bride (Thurman) emerges from a coma and swears revenge on her former master and his deadly squad of international assassins, played by Lucy Liu, Daryl Hannah, Vivica A. Fox and Michael Madsen.

The Good: Visually this is a fantastic achievement. It’s almost a joke to see heads and body parts flying through the air as Uma Thurman as the Bride makes minced meat of everyone in her path. The fight scenes aren’t entirely bad, yet occasionally tolerable.

The Bad: The bloodbath so often teeters on the ridiculous that instead of being caught up in it you laugh at its embarrassing shallowness. The weak uninspiring storyline along with boring dialogue never connects. Worst of all we bounce all over the time frame and completely disconnect with characters. And when Tarantino drops in an anime to give us a sense of history for Lucy Liu.

DVD Extras: “The Making of Kill Bill V1,” “Musical Performances,” and “Quentin Tarantino Trailers.” The making of comes with an interview with Tarantino who goes on and on.

Frankly: Kill Bill, like most of Tarantino’s movies, is love or hate. For good fighting just watch Crouching Tiger or if it’s the dopiness you are looking for then go for the original inspirations of Tarantino but don’t swallow this mess.
