King of the Hill: Season One

King of the Hill
Cast: Mike Judge, Greg Daniels
Studio: Fox
Rating: 8.5/10

Corporate Line: Arlen, Texas’ favorite family is on display when the animated hit series, KING OF THE HILL SEASON ONE arrives on DVD . Created by Mike Judge (“Beavis and Butthead”, Office Space), KING OF THE HILL follows the daily lives of “propane and propane accessories” salesman Hank Hill, wife Peggy, son Bobby, Hank’s three beer drinking buddies, his missing war “hero” father and his naive trailer park niece. Over seven million fans tune in each week to enter a world of beer cans, BBQ and power tools where one man is a beacon of Everyman truth – Hank Hill, KING OF THE HILL is Americana redneck comedy at its bellyaching finest. The collectible three-disc set includes the show’s first thirteen episodes, commentary, deleted scenes, Barenaked Ladies music video, a featurette and much more.

From “Beavis and Butthead” creator Mike Judge and former “The Simpsons” writer/producer Greg Daniels comes the down-home hit that proves everything really is bigger in Texas – including the laughs! So pull up a chair and join Hank Hill, his family and his neighbors for a beer-drinking, BBQ-ing good time with the hilarious first season of KING OF THE HILL.

The Good: Even though the first season’s animation was cruder than the current stock you don’t notice it. The laughs come like bullets. King of the Hill is the funniest sitcom this side of Springfield.

Who could resist this fantastic cast of characters? Once you start an episode you’ll find it hard to hit pause, although having the option of hitting pause is better than running to the bathroom during a minute and a half commercial.

Some of the most interesting items are given as extras. I love the “Making Of” Featurette documentary. You get to meet the voices behind the characters. It is actually quite odd to see the individuals’ faces behind the voices. I never paid much attention before to the names of those who played the characters. It’s a lot more fun than it sounds.

The Commentary fluctuates. Some of it is boring while other bits are hilarious. The odd part is that Mike Judge doesn’t do any commentary for the episodes. I find that odd and a bit of a waste. There is an okay Barenaked Ladies video, hilarious promos and the ‘Dos and Don’ts” of animation.

The Bad: Audio could have been a bit more solid, but this his nitpicking.

The Episodes:
Disc 1
• Pilot
• Square Peg
• The Order of the Straight Arrow
• Luanne’s Saga
• Hank’s Got the Willies
Disc 2
• West Side Story
• Hank’s Unmentionable Problem
• Shins of the Father
• Peggy the Boggle Champ
Disc 3

Frankly: If you love the show you have only yourself to blame for not buying it. It’s a fantastically funny show and worth the price.
