King of the Hill: Season Two

King of the Hill
Cast: Mike Judge, Greg Daniels
Studio: Fox
Rating: 7/10

Corporate Line: The complete second season set will include 23 episodes on 4 discs. The extras will be up to the high standards of the first season set. There will be in-character commentaries by voice actors Kathy Najimy, Pamela Segall Adlon, Brittany Murphy, Johnny Hardwick, Stephen Root, and Toby Huss (apparently not star Mike Judge, though — maybe next time). Seventeen episodes will have special director introductions. There will be featurettes on the animation of the show, more deleted scenes, excerpts from the now out-of-print book “The Boy Ain’t Right,” a selection of recordings and music videos inspired by the show, and more.

The Extras: Commentary by your favorite characters on selected episodes, 197 deleted and extended scenes including animatics and alternate endings, “The Arlen School of Drawing” tutorial, “The Boy Ain’t Right” book excerpts, “Animation Evolution” featurette, Music videos, Director intros and more.

There are some interesting commentary-it just to bad it’s only on “How to Fire A Rifle Without Really Trying.” We could have used more, especially from show creator Mike Judge who is once again AWOL.

I found the commentaries by the actors as the characters to be annoying. The idea is fun although I’d like to hear it from the actors directly.
My favorite extra is the featurette called “The Arlen School of Drawing” where animator/illustrator Glenn dion shows us how to draw Hank, Peggy, Bobby, Cotton, and Luanne. It’s absolutely marvelous. The director intros and music videos are fun-but you’ll probably only watch these once.

Frankly: Great extras, this time around the creators really did it right. The episodes are hit and miss-thankfully the hit more often than they miss. Although the second season isn’t as creative and funny as the first season it does add a depth that makes the following season one of the best. If you are a fan of King of the Hill and loved the first season there is no reason to miss this one. I laughed and watched episodes back to back-yes it did make me go back to the first season-but I still kept coming back for more. You can’t get enough Hank or Bobby.
