Corporate Line: From the moment she begins singing on her much-anticipated new album, Edie Brickell’s voice is instantly familiar, even after a ten-year break from recording. The quirky phrasing of the vocals and the introspective, narrative quality of the lyrics are unmistakably Edie.
The Good:
“I’d Be Surprised” – This is the Edie Brickell we all fell in love with over a decade ago. Gorgeous vocals ensnared in a tenderness that goes on and on.
“Once In A Blue Moon” – “Eyes like faded jeans” tell us about the preciousness of simple yet lovely storytelling.
“The One Who Went Away” and “Take A Walk” – Edie knows how to take lyrics and weave them into wonderful imagery.
“Not Saying Goodbye” – This song could play on and on without a care to go to the next song.
The Average:
“More Than Friends” – How can you resist?
“Rush Around” – Edie’s voice is still like satin, only the song isn’t going to move you.
The Ugly:
Are you kidding me.
Frankly: Edie Brickell returns after such a long time and I’m sure many more than me have missed her. Her voice is the ink that paints upon her lyrical canvas. The songs are best saved for a rainy day when everything seems to be going wrong and you need something to make the world seem right again.
