FILE UNDER: Fans of Sarah McLachlan might find the next in line.
CORPORATE LINE: Red-haired, 20-year-old singer-songwriter Holly Brook has caused a Sarah McLachlan-Tori Amos sensation with her vocals on Fort Minor’s “Where’d You Go”—the most added Top 40 Mainstream track this spring. A la Dido’s appearance on an Eminem hit that launched her platinum career, everyone is curious: “Who is that amazing voice?” Meet Holly Brook. Listen to her debut album, Like Blood Like Honey. Then you’ll know.
THE GOOD:
“Giving It Up For You”- A song about vices and giving it up for love. It might be hard to maintain this momentum.
THE AVERAGE:
“Wanted” – Brook has a Sarah McLachlan style voice—the difference is that McLachlan has a larger vocal range and bigger songs.
“Like Blood Like Honey” – Pretty songs aren’t necessarily good songs—and this is a perfect example of that.
THE BAD:
Nothing.
FRANKLY: What Holly Brook lacks in great songs she almost makes up for with a gorgeous voice. This isn’t the last we’ll hear of Brook. She can only get better from here. What she’ll need to bring is songs with memorable hooks to gain the love that fans have for Sarah McLachlan and artists of her ilk. Like Blood Like Money is a missed opportunity, however Holly Brook is definitely one to watch.
