The Iron Giant

The Iron Giant
Cast: Animation
Studio: Warner Bros.
Rating: 8/10

CORPORATE LINE: The Iron Giant follows the incredible adventures of young Hogarth Hughes who late one night discovers and befriends an enormous robot fallen from the stars. But Hogarth now has a very big problem: how do you keep a 50-foot-tall, steel-eating giant a secret – especially when there’s a nosy government agent asking questions in town and the combined land, sea and air power of the U.S. military mobilizing to demolish the “alien invader?”

With a little bit of help from his junkyard dealer buddy Dean (Harry Connick Jr.) and his skeptical mother Annie (Jennifer Aniston), Hogarth is about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime and, along the way, learn a very valuable lesson about trust and friendship.

THE FILM: Iron Giant is based on Ted Hughes’ 1968 novel. The tie that binds the Iron Giant is the emotion that locks you to your seat. There is something simple, yet glorious about the animation and spirit of the film. Iron Giant doesn’t go for the over-the-top Disney style instead leading with a solid heart that never lets up.

Interestingly, Iron Giant is ageless. No matter if you are a child, parent, or grandparent the Iron Giant is no less inspiring and alluring. The fact that this story creates soul in an animated robot is wonderful. Countless movies try to endear us to animated characters but seldom do we cheer and cry for one. Not only do we cheer for the robot, but also the unlikely hero. It’s powerful storytelling.

DVD FEATURES: including 8 “never-before-seen” scenes including an alternate opening, all with director commentary, 13 mini-documentaries highlighting key sequences and a featurette, “The Voice Of The Giant,” hosted Vin Diesel and director Brad Bird. There is also an alternate opening sequence. 13 mini documentaries revealing the origin and the in-depth development process of The Iron Giant.
