Herbie Fully Loaded

Herbie Fully Loaded
Cast: Lindsay Lohan, Justin Long, Breckin Meyer
Studio: Disney
Rating: 5/10

CORPORATE LINE: Start your engines! Herbie, the most beloved car star of them all, is back and Lindsay Lohan’s got him in Disney’s all new revved-up comedy adventure, HERBIE: FULLY LOADED. Lohan stars as Maggie Peyton, the new owner of Number 53 – the free-wheelin’ Volkswagen bug with a mind of its own – who puts the car through its paces on the road to becoming a NASCAR competitor.

Herbie’s got some new tricks under his hood as he takes audiences for an action-packed spin in this high-speed comedy. With an all-star cast along for a wild ride, this comedy puts Herbie to the test – on-road, off-road, on the track and into the record books.

THE FILM: The story is the first big problem. The original Herbie wasn’t believable yet the cast was interesting and the story had some depth. Lohan makes for a charming lead too bad all the charm in the world can’t save this story.

Herbie is a movie about a daughter, her father and a new best friend, Herbie. So much of the story is a throwaway—like Maggie’s love interest. The writers went for the tried-and-true underdog story with Maggie and Herbie as the unlikely champions.

Kids might find Herbie to be cool and cute. Adults will find it shallow and too cutesy. Every laugh comes from Herbie’s silly little winks of the headlight and smiles from the bumper. It’s something that will have kids laughing but these gimmicks can’t save the entire film.

FRANKLY: Director Angela Robinson is out of her league trying to turn this stinker into something worth watching. The final race should have some semblance of suspense but couldn’t have been lamer. A good cast is squandered by a poor script and tame storyline. Even if kids may enjoy it for the moment it isn’t the usual Disney movie that we’ll pass on to the next generation.
