CORPORATE LINE: Brand Nubian’s new LP, “Fire In The Hole.” One of the few enduring groups of hip-hop’s golden era, and consisting of its’ core original members (Grand Puba, Lord Jamar, Sadat X), Brand Nubian remains a timeless talent, delivering an album that is as relevant in today’s commercial climate as it is a watershed musical reunion. With production from Lord Jamar and DJ Alamo, ‘Fire in the Hole’ promises to be a soulful reunion that will be appreciated by old fans and new.
THE GREAT:
“Who Wanna Be A Star?” – So you want to be a hip-hop star? Go from nothing to having a hit—it’s not everything you think it is. Grand Puba lays it down and sounds sharper than ever.
“Just Don’t Learn” – Everyone wonders what happened to the messages in hip-hop—you only need to listen to Brand Nubian to find some depth. The gun culture that has risen in the streets needs to come to an end and Brand Nubian take it head on.
THE AVERAGE:
“Young Son” – It’s time for the adults to step up and teach the kids right from wrong. Brand Nubian knows how to deliver a message.
“Coming Years” – Sometimes reality is a bitch—but its never sounded so right.
“Got A Knot” – Grand Puba lays it down to bad the silly chorus leaves a lot to be desired.
THE BAD:
“Momma” – Nice sentiment—to bad it’s not a good song.
FRANKLY: “It’s brand new baby!” Not really… Brand Nubian has been around the block for near fifteen years and yet they don’t sound like any dust has settled. Fire In The Hole is a welcome return to the old being new.
