Corporate Line: The Planet Express crew blasts onto DVD on August 12 in the “FUTURAMA” VOLUME TWO DVD COLLECTION from Fox Home Entertainment. Matt Groening, creator and Executive Producer of “The Simpsons,” produced this Jetsons-meets-Simpsons satire of pop culture, science-fiction, and life among the beer-fueled robots of the year 3000. “FUTURAMA” VOLUME TWO is a four-disc set that includes all nineteen episodes from the second production season, plus an entire universe of exclusive bonus materials, including deleted scenes, Easter eggs, animatics, storyboards and much more.
The Good: This season is stronger than the first. It’s more episodic with fantastic references to pop culture of the present from what would be the long, thought lost, past. One episode has a laugh by doing Married… With Children, Iron Giant, and Star Wars. One thing you can be assured of with anything Matt Groening puts out is laughs at the expense of everyone – but most of all things that he finds fun.
The laughs are as consistent with the Simpsons – but not always as sophisticated. Speaking of fun, the commentary track is great. It’s an orgy of people from Matt Groening to David X. Cohen to Billy West. The jokes even seem to come at their own expense.
Great audio in Dolby surround. The video looks fantastic. If you watched it on your analog cable prepare to love the animation all over again.
The Bad: If you are missing a funny bone you might want to skip this set.
