Drowning Mona

Drowning Mona
Cast: Bette Midler
Studio: Destination
Rating: 6.5/10

Drowning Mona is full of stars, laughs and twists. The cast is sound. You’ve got Danny DeVito, Bette Midler, Neve Cambell and Casey Affleck. Casey who? Well, get used to that name because Ben’s little brother is the show stealer. His small brain meets big heart is perfect for his dry one-liners. This movie is more than one-liners, but not much more. Still, it’s quite fun.

The story goes little like this: In the quiet suburban town of Verplanck, New York, nothing exciting ever really happens, until now. The most hated woman in town, Mona Dearly (Bette Midler), drives into the Hudson to her death. Funny, but no one really seems to mind. In fact, it seems to be good luck for all. Twisted, isn’t it? Not half as twisted as their fetish for Yugos.

Well, it’s no accident. The whole town is full of suspects. Watch the film and you might figure it out quickly, or will you? The plot has some twists and offers up some really quirky answers to questions no one is really asking.

Drowning Mona starts off really strong and only runs about an hour and a half. There are quick laughs all around. The cast is great, all but Neve Campbell and her terrible Long Island accent. Okay, she does play her part well, but that’s only when she forgets to add the accent into her lines. Bette Midler, though only in the movie for brief flashbacks, makes for a great villain. Everyone in the town hated her, and when you see why, you’ll start to hate her too. For the most part, Drowning Mona is full of laughs. Oftentimes, we in the crowd would laugh so hard we’d miss other lines in the film. When it’s all said and done, this film isn’t the comedy of the year, but it’s sure worth the price of admission.
