Sly wrote Rocky what seems ten lifetimes ago, and now comes another original script from the mind of Stallone, Driven.
Driven is a tour of races that revolve around the life of Stallone’s character, Joe Tanto. Tanto is a man who is facing the end of his career and watching his star fall out of the sky. Tanto has to watch his former self being recreated in a new star, Jimmy Blye (Kip Pardue). Can you say Rocky V?
Stallone’s style of writing is obvious. He reads right from the screenwriting handbook and steals a lot from himself and his Rocky script, the obvious being the chase through the streets in prototype racecars. Tanto must save the new kid’s ass.
It’s dull as hell to see everything you expect unfolding right in front of you. Couldn’t we for once be surprised, even if only for a moment? The racing is cool. What did you expect from a movie called Driven? But if I wanted to pay to see cars race, I’d go to the track where the experience is real.
