Look out Farrah, Kate, and Jacqueline. The new Angels are here, and they have definitely surpassed all expectations. It just goes to show that sometimes the best ideas lie in an already produced string of television shows. It doesn’t even matter that the show existed some twenty odd years ago.
What three things make up the perfect Angels? Well, besides beauty, brains, and brawn, try three of Hollywood’s hottest actresses: Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu, and Cameron Diaz. All three are masters of disguise who can hold their own when it comes to combat.
Not only do they encompass the traits of the ultimate macho woman, they each also bring a sense of realism that makes them that much more likable. Dylan (Drew Barrymore) has this uncanny knack for falling for the wrong guys, Alex (Lucy Liu) can’t make a batch of muffins to save her life, and Natalie (Cameron Diaz) is so clueless that she still refers to going to the bathroom by the numbers. Not only are the Angels in top form, but the supporting cast, led by Bill Murray as Bosley, does more than carry their weight. Crispin Glover is downright spooky as Thin Man, and Luke Wilson (Bluestreak and Barrymore’s ex) gains his fair share of laughs as Natalie’s love interest. Kelly Lynch gets into character as the saucy Vivian, and Sam Rockwell (The Green Mile) is absolutely charismatic as Eric Knox. The list goes on, but for fear of spoiling a few surprises, I’ll stop there.
Charlie’s Angels falls nothing short of its television predecessor, recreating the same intensity and action-packed adventure so many grew to love. It mixes just enough comedy with adventure while still appealing to a variety of ages. It doesn’t take itself seriously, which is the main reason it works so well. Those who were fans of the series won’t be disappointed and those too young to remember will have a fresh perspective and some new heroines to cheer for.
