CORPORATE LINE: In CHARMED, the three Halliwell sisters have accepted their destiny of protecting the innocent and vanquishing evil doers, even though that is generally not on the agenda of every twenty-something on the fast track to discovering what life’s all about. Prue (Doherty), the oldest, is driven to succeed and dislikes the free-spirited antics of the youngest sister Phoebe (Milano). Piper (Combs), the earthy middle sister, mediates between her siblings. Prue has the power to move objects, Piper to freeze time and Phoebe to see the future. The sisters must band together to protect themselves, and the world, from the dark, demonic forces that seek to destroy them.
THE SHOW: For me, the first season was stronger than the second—mostly because it’s little more than a copy of the first. There is an addition of some new characters, Andy is gone, but there are new love interests. There is less of the coming together of the sisters and that should leave more room for the show’s development—but it doesn’t.
Watching Charmed you have to think this is a bad clone of Buffy—with three witches. The major difference is Buffy had more interesting characters and monsters. Charmed has demons that are destroyed in similar ways time and again. Also, Charmed introduces some great stories that could have been continued throughout the entire season and yet they are finished by the end of the show.

FRANKLY: Charmed is a fun show to watch. I know it didn’t sound like I enjoyed it much but being critical is part of the job. The biggest issue overall is the ability to make the show deeper and make you want to watch the next episode. Buffy eventually figured this out and it paid huge dividends. Charmed missed that in its second season but nonetheless its good, shameless entertainment.
