Chasing Liberty

Chasing Liberty
Cast: Mandy Moore, Matthew Goode
Studio: Warner Bros.
Rating: 6/10

Corporate Line: Tired of being followed around every moment of every day, the 18-year-old daughter (Moore) of the president (Harmon) of the United States ditches her Secret Service handlers (Piven, Sciorra) and sets out on a romantic road trip through Europe with her boyfriend (Goode).

The Good: Mandy Moore is surprisingly fresh – that is the good wait until the bad. Matthew Goode is no Gregory Peck and certainly no Hugh Grant. Moore isn’t Aubrey Hepburn either as the script tap dances close to Roman Holiday.

Annabella Sciorra and Jeremy Piven are agents who tried to add comic relief. They could have made a movie about those two and cut it completely out of this movie. It was hard to figure out if it was Moore and Goode who made the film seem longer or Sciorra and Piven. The movie moves slowly and it’s the director’s fault for indulging this secondary relationship.

The Bad: Moore has very little range – perhaps it’s the scripts. Perhaps it’s her lack of skill. Either way she never has a chance to push her self to the edge or let herself fall right over.

There are more holes than swiss cheese. I won’t tell you how they lose their wallets, but I’d like to know how you could go from one country to another without a passport. Isn’t that odd? Not to mention no money.

Frankly: Maybe I’m a smuck, maybe it’s cheesy, not swiss cheesy, or could I just be a sentimental fool if I say I liked Chasing Liberty? I laughed; I certainly didn’t cry – I mean how manly would that be? I’m a sucker for a good romantic comedy I just won’t admit I ever said it.
