CORPORATE LINE: It is a moonlit night in Los Angeles, when something lurking in the shadows causes their car to suddenly swerve off the road, a teenaged brother and his career-driven sister emerge relatively unscathed, but forever changed by the accident. Suddenly, the siblings find themselves blessed with increased physical strength, heightened sensibilities and undeniable allure to everyone around them. But, what if what happened to them that night wasn’t just an accident and what seemed like fate was really something more? It is only a matter of time before Ellie (Christina Ricci) and Jimmy (Jesse Eisenberg “Rodger Dodger”) can no longer control these impulses because their newfound power comes with a price that they never expected to pay and a mystery that only they can solve.
THE GOOD: It had potential to be a fun popcorn flick.
THE BAD: The werewolf. The lack of creativity with these movies is unbelievable. The CGI werewolf looks like a cartoon character in a live action movie—not once are you convinced otherwise. Sure the werewolf is scary however it takes away from believing that could happen to you—that is what makes a film truly frightening.
Cursed is a who’s who of washed up actors and actresses—even late night talk show hosts. It’s sort of ironic that Christina Ricci plays Ellie an assistant on the Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn. It would have been real funny had Kilborn been killed by a werewolf thus the reason he’s no longer doing the show.
Cursed is every werewolf cliché wrapped into one. Throw in a little Teen Wolf and every other film about these monsters and you know everything you need to know about Cursed. Director Wes Craven and screenwriter Kevin Williamson always find a way to work in comedy with their horror. I don’t recall needing to laugh during the Exoricist—but its been Craven’s calling card all along and it’s run its course.
FRANKLY: Cursed can’t hold a fang to American Werewolf in London. If you really want to get your heart pumping and lose sleep from a werewolf flick watch the Howling instead.
