Barbershop 2

Barbershop 2
Cast: Ice Cube, Cedric the Entertainer, Garcelle Beauvais , Queen Latifah, Eve
Studio: MGM
Rating: 5.5/10

Corporate Line: Calvin, Eddie, Terri, Jimmy, Isaac, Ricky, and Dinka are open for business again at Calvin’s Barbershop. Gina, a stylist at the beauty shop next door, is now trying to cut in on his business. Calvin is again struggling to keep his father’s shop and traditions alive–this time against urban developers looking to replace “mom & pop” establishments with name-brand chains. The world changes, but some things never go out of style–from current events and politics to relationships and love, you can still say anything you want at the barbershop.

The Good: First and foremost the cast has that chemistry that is unmistakable. Cedric The Entertainer steals each scene he is in. Cedric takes shots at the sniper, politics, R. Kelly, and anyone that gets in his way including Queen Latifah. If you came to see the Queen you’ll be unsatisfied as she only rarely comes in off the bench. The laughs are there not as often as in the first Barbershop.

The Bad: The storyline is terrible. It kills the entire film and the flow of the movie. The writers obviously knew we couldn’t just sit in the barbershop all day and tell jokes and that was a movie it couldn’t be could it? Why not? I bet it’d be better than the weak premise of this movie. Some evil, and-as-usual-shady developers (aren’t those who make money always portrayed as evil in films?) want to build a high-class barbershop across the street the urban super cuts’ called Nappy Cuts.’ That’s all well and good. What would have been fun is if we saw the store open and develop the film around the competition, but this doesn’t happen heck we get to the end of the film before it happens and then well I can’t tell you what happens. Let’s just say its not fulfilling. So much could have happened that didn’t. Instead it’s a lot of back and forth doing a lot of nothing but sitting in the barbershop.

Frankly: Why can’t they just do the whole movie in the barbershop talking trash, cutting hair, picking on customers, and that be that? Does it always have to be about the evil people outside? That’s why we go to the barbershop to get away from that crazy outside world and to take some off the sides.
