Birthday Girl has potential, and like most it really just ends up going someplace, just not anywhere new.
Nicole Kidman plays a Russian mail-order bride and I don’t quite understand the casting of Ben Chaplin as the guy who purchases her considering he’s a good looking guy. If he can’t find a woman than where is the hope for the rest of the single guys in the world? We teeter on reality and casting of shiny, pretty people who might persuade woman to want to actually see this film. After all its all moot as Chaplin’s character ends up being there as nothing more than a punch line.
The story takes the choice twists, a certainty; until it wraps itself in the bow you always knew it would. To be honest there isn’t a thing about Birthday Girl that is worth going on and on about. It is what it is, a way to burn time away from your life. Happy Birthday.
