Corporate Line: Bruce Almighty stars Jim Carrey as Bruce Nolan, a “human interest” television reporter in Buffalo, New York who is discontented with almost everything in life, despite his popularity and the love of his girlfriend Grace (Jennifer Aniston). At the end of the worst day in his life, Bruce angrily ridicules and rages against God – and God responds. He appears in human form (Morgan Freeman) and, endowing Bruce with all of His divine powers, challenges Bruce to take on the big job and see if he can do it any better.
The Good: Jim Carrey uses each film as his canvas to act like an idiot. Thankfully he does the same in Bruce Almighty otherwise there’d be no reason to watch. You will laugh out loud. Too bad that is the most that can be said.
The Bad: If you had all of God’s powers what would you do? I’m sure you’d use them a heck of a lot more than Carrey’s character. It’s almost pathetic to watch him wander around my hometown of Buffalo and do nothing. It is a love story, we get that however a movie that has so many ways to go bothers you when it goes nowhere.
Frankly: Bruce Almighty is a little preachy, but you can get over that. Jim Carrey is hilarious on occasion which makes up for a few of the weaker spots. However you can’t ignore the power the writers and directors had with this character. They had all the power in the universe and sadly they don’t do much more than pull a monkey out of a hoods butt. Those my friends are cheap parlor tricks, not the work of a God.
