The Exorcism Emily Rose

The Exorcism Emily Rose
Cast: Tom Wilkinson, Laura Linney, Jennifer Carpenter
Studio: Sony
Rating: 5/10

CORPORATE LINE: In an extremely rare decision, the Catholic Church officially recognized the demonic possession of a 19 year-old college freshman. Told in terrifying flashbacks, THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE chronicles the haunting trial of the priest accused of negligence resulting in the death of the young girl believed to be possessed. Inspired by true events, the film stars Laura Linney as the lawyer who takes on the task of defending the priest (Tom Wilkinson) who performed the controversial exorcism.

THE MOVIE: The exorcism is part horror flick and part courtroom drama. The problem with the horror aspect of the movie is the cheap effects. We’ve seen it all before and that doesn’t help matters—especially when the rest of the film leaves no room to suck.

Even the possessed Emily takes a lot from the original Exorcist—minus the spinning head. The court aspect of the film doesn’t fair any better. Honestly, most of The Exorcism of Emily Rose is downright awful. Those of you who want to see the movie because of the commercial and its scary characters will be disappointed considering the commercial show the only scary scenes.

FRANKLY: One of the failings for The Exorcism of Emily Rose is the words “Based on a True Story.” I stopped believing that the moment those words showed up. Most of the film is idiotic particularly in this era. The Priest is trying to save his neck but has only a tape of the exorcism. He couldn’t borrow a camcorder? Couldn’t even take a Polaroid? That’s more disturbing than the possessed girl eating bugs.
