The Boondock Saints: Collector’s Edition

The Boondock Saints: Collector's Edition
Cast: Willem Dafoe, Sean Patrick Flanery, Norman Reedus
Studio: Fox
Rating: 6/10

CORPORATE LINE: Fraternal twins Conner (Flanery – SUICIDE KINGS) and Murphey (Reedus – GOSSIP) MacMannus are on a mission from God to rid Boston of crime. However, instead of signing up for the police force, these hard-drinking Irish-American brothers take the law into their own hands a la Charles Bronson in DEATH WISH. Heralded as saints by the city’s beleaguered residents, the brothers also attract the attention of Paul Smecker (Dafoe – EXISTENZ), the openly gay FBI special agent assigned to investigate the spate of killings amongst the ranks of the Russian mafia. First-time director Duffy pulls out all the breaks in this inventive, action-packed thriller sure to please fans of HARD BOILED and RESERVOIR DOGS.

THE EXTRAS:
Commentary by writer/director Troy Duffy – Duffy’s commentary goes behind directing the actors and his love for the movie. It’s interesting to get his insight into the film and others views on the controversial film.

Commentary by actor Billy Connolly – An interesting commentary but not nearly as deep as Troy Duffy’s discussion.

Finally there are deleted scenes, outtakes, and cast and crew filmographies.

FRANKLY: The Boondock Saints is a movie you either love or hate. It’s violent and has moments of insanity that make it hard to judge even with moments of brilliance. The Boondock Saints is carried by a good cast—most notably William Dafoe. This is Director Troy Duffy’s directorial—had this movie been directed by a more seasoned director it might have been better. If you haven’t seen The Boondock Saints its hard to recommend unless you love movies like Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels or Tarantinto style films. Even then it doesn’t mean The Boondock Saints is as good.
