The Butthole Surfers are now legends. They don’t have songs you’d hear on the radio, well, except their hit a few years ago, “Pepper”. Instead their notoriety comes from their obscurity. With albums that are deemed classics by those in the know, it takes an open mind to enjoy albums like Hairway To Steven and Locust Abortion Technician. Now together for almost two decades, the Buttholes are back. Excited?
Weird Revolution is as it’s titled. Weird. Some tracks sound worthy of radio, like “The Shame Of Life” which was co-written by Kid Rock. The problem with the Kid Rock connection is that it’s not Butthole-like, yet they continue the sound on “Dracula From Houston”. Even worse are tracks like “Mexico” which is just plain stupid and “Get Down” which just rhymes for rhyme’s sake.
The sharpest tracks are “Venus” and “Jet Fighter”. “Jet Fighter”, however lame the chorus might be, has a great melody and a keen look at life. This is classic Butthole Surfer. What has always piqued my interest in this group is their out of the ordinary look at life from all eyes. Weird Revolution only touches that, never truly embracing their legendary visions.
