The Vigilante series has now been adopted for the Dreamcast. It looks pretty good too. The game is just really a shoot ’em up. The story isn’t going to get you to rush to save the world and the controls aren’t going to make you fall in love.
The first thing that bothered me was that you’ve got to think way too much. Okay, that is probably a poor statement, but in a game where destruction is the key I don’t want to have too many things on my mind other than how fast can I launch my missiles. I have to admit that there really is little thought in the game except how to handle the controls.
Some of the cars are just a bit hard to handle. I was driving this insane moon vehicle and found it hard to keep that thing going where I wanted it to. The faster the car the hard it was to control. So give me the bus or big garbage truck and I’m a happy ramming thing. The problem is that you’ll get blown to bits if you can’t either run or swing the vehicle around to mount your own attack. Not to mention the fact that you have to injure the bad guys while you go around and find things. So while you are trying not to destroy the bad guys until you find everything. If you do then essentially you don’t successfully complete the area.
Vigilante 8 is a fun blow em up game. Nothing is cooler than driving through buildings, chasing other cars down and shooting the hell out of them. And any game that has a giant ant launching flaming rocks you know you can’t go wrong.
