Tekken 5

Tekken 5
Game: Tekken 5
Platform: Ps2
Studio: Namco
Rating: 9/10

GAME STUDIO DESCRIPTION: As the curtain falls on Iron Fist Tournament 4, Jin Kazama carves a vengeful swathe through his family, defeating Kazuya and Heihachi in a furious battle at Mishima Zaibatsu headquarters. Suddenly an army of Jacks bursts through the walls and ambushes the Mishima clan. Jin flees and Kazuya betrays his father by heaving him into the path of the murderous Jacks to escape himself. Seconds later, Honmaru, Heihachi’s personal residence atop the Zaibatsu, is consumed in a titanic explosion with the elder Mishima still inside. A mysterious man in black who has been observing the struggle scans the flaming ruins and intones into his radio: “Heihachi Mishima is dead.”

A month later, the announcement the world was waiting for is made: King of Iron Fist Tournament 5 is set. The battle begins to determine the fate of the entire Mishima Zaibatsu conglomerate and its fallen ruler, Heihachi Mishima.

PLAY: Story Mode sets up with one player going through a handful of fights. You’ll learn about each fighter and then take them on as you progress through the story. The end, as usual, is worth watching.

One perfect aspect is the ability to customize your fighter. You earn points/money along the way which lets you make changes to everything from accessories to other unique items. Each character has different aspects that can be customized.

Arcade mode is a face off with what is a computer opponent that doesn’t play like a computer opponent. The fighters are created by other players (developers) and given that person’s AI. The AI fighters are very good and many of them are a handful. Their styles are different and better than the average arcade-computer AI. If you’ve ever had a friend who is good at a fighting game then you get the idea. The characters are something old and something new so fans of the past series will be happy to see some of those back again.

One very cool addition is the ability to play the arcade mode of past Tekken games. It’s a fantastic way to see just how far the series has come and just how good Tekken 5 is now.

GRAPHICS: The characters are well modeled. The effects create the feeling of quickness and power. There is a grace to the characters movements—a fluidity that seems to come right out of a martial arts film. This is a brilliant looking game—one of the best in recent memory. The backgrounds are gorgeous and certainly some of the most creative environments you’ll see. If this isn’t the best looking game on the PS2 it sure ranks up there.

SOUND: The soundtrack decent. The dialogue is where the game shines. Each character speaks in their native tongue—a great touch. The sound effects are fantastic and live up to everything you see.

FRANKLY: Tekken 5 is a monster of an addition to the Tekken franchise. Anyone who loves to fight will do well to add this to their game library.
