Test Drive: Eve of Destruction

Test Drive: Eve of Destruction
Game: Test Drive: Eve of Destruction
Platform: PS2
Studio: Atari
Rating: 6.5/10

GAME STUDIO DESCRIPTION: Straight from the small-town tracks across America, it’s fender-flattening mayhem where being the fastest doesn’t guarantee you a checkered flag. From outrageous Demolition Derbies to head-on Suicide Races, you’ve gotta dish out the dents to survive. Brace yourself for a total free-for-all!

GRAPHICS: The cars take a beating. There is a good degree of illustrating the damage after they get the crap knocked out of them. Other than that there isn’t much more to look at—besides your own back.

PLAY: Do you like to smash into things? Then this is the game for you. There are a handful of vehicles from muscle cars to an ambulance or school bus. The best aspect is the number of race options available.

In career mode you start with a beat-up ride and little cash and try to work your way out of the trailer park. You must drive around to make cash in different races. There are twenty-five events in career mode and while some of the events are fun—others are much more monotonous.

Racing is simple—gas, brake, reverse. There is something to be said about smashing into another car or ten. It is a hell of a lot of fun. The figure-8 race is awesome. You want to win, but at the same time when you hit that ramp you’re not always sure where you’ll land. Smash-up derby is nothing more than trying to outlast a dozen other lunatics.

SOUND: The rock soundtrack isn’t bad—that is if you didn’t hear the same songs over and over and over again.

FRANKLY: Test Drive: Eve of Destruction is fun—for a while. Rent it.
