CORPORATE LINE: The spawn of mad musical scientist Chris Colonna, Bumblebeez 81 is a true wonder, a mutated freak child of bloozy punk noise, hip-hop attitude, and sleazy electronica loops and rhythms. Modular Recordings’ The Printz album combines Bumblebeez 81’s two acclaimed Australian and English releases – White Printz and Red Printz – into one full-length collection of sexy, spontaneous sonic chaos. Tracks like “Pony Ride” and “Pink Firy Floss” are an irresistibly frenetic splatter of riff-rockin’ hooks, floor-shakin’ beats, and the capricious rap stylings of Kid Sister Pia, all cut n’ pasted for your listening pleasure in Chris’s bedroom at the Colonna family farm. Utterly intoxicating and absolutely unprecedented, The Printz Eps marks the arrival of something not often seen these days – a real deal original artist.
THE GREAT:
Nothing.
THE AVERAGE:
“Pony Ride” – Some sort of bizarre Rock-a-billy.
“Step Back” – The love affair with the Strokes and the Vines isn’t over yet. The Bumblebeez are ready to ride that wave until it swallows them whole.
THE BAD:
“I’ve Come With Water” – Good grief. Toddlers could have written a better song.
“Vila Attack” – Queen Vila couldn’t sing or rap to save her life.
FRANKLY: Bumblebeez 81—is this a bad joke? The Bumblebeez 81 laid the distortion on thick because the vocals are bad and hope this will cover it up—it only makes it worse. Nothing is worse than a wanna-be Australian duo attempting to copy the White Stripes. Bumblebeez 81 get a full 1.5 points, not for being good, for conning someone to sign them to a record label.
