GRAPHICS: Off the charts. The 3D design and modeling is astonishing. There is almost more depth than a person can take in. The faces change expression depending upon the situation, toddlers flail around like a—well, a toddler. You can manage clothes—suit to work, pajamas to bed. The camera allows you to look in like God at just about anything.
PLAY: Sometimes a game is scary and it causes your hands to sweat. Other times your hands are so busy you have to walk away to give your fingers a chance to recuperate—but with Sims 2 it can be dizzying. There is so much to do, so many things to maintain that you might find yourself going to bed at night thinking about it. Alright, you will go to bed at night thinking about it.
Like its predecessor you can control 1-8 characters and basically play God. Want your character to be successful? Your wish is your Sims command. Maybe you want them to have children and live the life of leisure, be a slob, be rich, be smart, dream—you can do it. You choose their aspirations and then deal with each consequence—especially partying and Woohoo’ing (you know… doing it… making babies, etc.).
There is a depth in Sims 2 that allows you to carry on through children. You watch as your second generation Sim grows up. The ability to slow aging—or shut it off altogether is almost overwhelming. There is a lot of work to manage children—but you know it was fun—and if you can’t deal with it hire a nanny. The amount of work put into Sims 2 is astonishing. Depending upon what type of Sim you are as an adult you’ll find that it can make it harder or easier to raise your children.
There are also curveballs along the way that can affect your Sim’s mood. Sometimes you’ll run into a crisis at work and other times you might get a promotion that really pushes your life above and beyond right into a mansion.
SOUND: This is supposed to be the real world, or a sim world, and you get every sound imaginable; from laughing, to crying, to everything in between. The music can get somewhat repetitive but you can add your own music!
FRANKLY: The addiction is what gets you. Prepare to go to bed, wake in the morning, and think about Sims 2 while you are trying to go through your day. Drugs are addicting, Sims 2 is obsession.
