The story begins with Captain Cervantes, one of the most dreadful pirates of the era. After he acquired the evil twin swords, Soul Edge, Cervantes and his mighty ship, the Adrian, incited fear across the Atlantic Ocean. Once fully possessed by the demon swords, he slew his entire crew and the residence of his port base in Spain. After the bloodshed, Cervantes rested himself at the remains of what was once known as the Black Tail Inn. Temporarily satisfied with the twisted desire to consume souls, the evil swords rested and prepared to create the Child of the Evil Swords
This is just the beginning of the story. As you can see, this game has been well thought out. It skimps on no details and will have you in awe when you play it. I’m not a big fan of fight games, but I’d heard so much raving about Soul Calibur, both for its graphics and amazing game play, that I had to give it a go. And the raving wasn’t overstated.
Soul Caliber’s fighters are called Souls and they are amazing. My favorite soul to kick ass with is the scissorhanded master of chop, Voldo. The characters range from the giant ax-toting monster Astaroth to the normal looking yet lethal Kilik and the lovely Ivy. Each character seems to have an endless supply of moves, adding much to the game’s enjoyment.
The graphics cannot be admired enough. The backgrounds are fabulous too, but it is the realistic fighters that will blow you away. The 3D animation is just the beginning. The clothing and hair flow realistically. The soundtracks for the fights set the tone perfectly and the clash of weapons puts you right there in the ring.
A lot of people will say this is a must buy, but not every game is going to do it for everyone. I think this game is one of the best I’ve ever seen, particularly for a fight game. The problem is that, like most fight games, if you play solo, after you get a handle on the gameplay you quickly get bored. I cruised through the levels and difficulties with no problem. Just mashing the buttons I could break my opponent down quickly. If you want to have a lot of head-to-head battles, this game should be part of your collection. Either way, you have to rent it and get a feel for it. It’s a blast you can’t pass on.
