Spider-Man 2
Game: Spider-Man 2
Platform: PS2
Studio: Activision
Rating: 7.5/10

GAME STUDIO DESCRIPTION: Spider – Man is about to scale new heights. The highly anticipated sequel game to Columbia Pictures mega hit film Spider – Man is about to get even bigger as you take the role of Spider – Man through expansive locations from the movie. Patrol the streets and skies of a living, breathing, massively modeled Manhattan, scaling buildings, slinging webs, fighting crime and confronting numerous villains, including Dr. Octopus (Doc Ock). Prepare to go wherever a spider can as the game transports you off the silver screen into a larger – than – life adventure all your own. For a movie – like experience, battle the nefarious Doc Ock and his henchmen in locations taken straight from the film. In addition to the Marvel characters featured in the upcoming film sequel, additional diabolical villains from the expansive Marvel comic character roster make exclusive game appearances, including Mysterio and Lizard. Go wherever a spider can – Immerse yourself in the city of Manhattan, which is constructed as a large streaming map populated by cars, pedestrians and criminals. Jump from street level to rooftops as you patrol the city. New web – swinging abilities – Realistic physics impact your direction as you swing from building corners, lampposts – even helicopters. Harness your super strength for powerful jumps and lightning – fast web crawling. Face the responsibilities of a Super Hero – Take time out from your main missions to foil random crimes in the streets. The more crimes you prevent, the more your hero rating increases, giving you access to advanced attacks and maneuvers.

GRAPHICS: The character models are terrible—especially the citizens. Spidey’s model is better for obvious reasons. The character models of Tobey Maguire are decent as is Alfred Molina as Doc Ock, but still look blocky. The city on the other hand is very well designed.

CONTROLS: Spider-man 2 is an open format that feels more free-flowing than it truly is. There are two control schemes, simple and one the other is more complex. The complex is actually the better of the two however if you have a young child playing it might be too much for them to handle.

As Spider-man most of your enemies are a joke—if you can hit the buttons like gangbusters then you shouldn’t have a problem rolling through the game. “Spider reflex mode” puts everything in slow motion except for spidey who can see the attacks before they happen and can react. It sounds cooler than how it functions.

Spider-man 2 is broken up into chapters. Each chapter has a goal and when complete, you can earn “hero points” which give new moves, etc. The problem with these sequences is that the way you earn your points seem meaningless and often come off as a waste of time. Many times you’ll be doing the same things over and over which make you wonder why the designers couldn’t get more creative—it would have been nice if each chapter offered all new crimes.

SOUND: The voice acting is at least done by the actors, Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, etc. There is nothing worse than a game based on a film with voice actors trying to sound like the real character. The voice acting for the tutorial is often annoying.

FRANKLY: Surprisingly Spiderman 2 could be completed in a day—sunrise to sunset with time to spare for ice cream.
