Rampage: Total Destruction

Rampage: Total Destruction
Game: Rampage: Total Destruction
Platform: PS2
Studio: Midway
Rating: 4/10

GAME DESCRIPTION: Rampage: Total Destruction offers a fresh take on an arcade classic complete with everyone’s favorite monsters. Control George, Lizzie, and Ralph as they go around the world, destroying major cities through direct destruction or through their fighting. Virtually everything in the environment can be damaged, broken, and utterly destroyed with plenty of hilarious results. Aided by power-ups, the Rampage: Total Destruction monsters will acquire upgrades throughout the course of a single campaign — leading to even more destruction.

PLAY: Remakes are often misguided in hope of capturing an audience that will spend money on nostalgia. That thinking carried over to the gameplay as everything looks, feels, plays, and is as lackluster as the original. What would have been cool is a Rampage version of the H3 commercial.

The gameplay is simple button mashing with the same goal of smashing buildings. There is an attempt at creating a story and an addition of new characters, along with the old ones, and neither addition makes the game anymore interesting. The different monsters have different abilities in a weak attempt at adding a depth that isn’t there.

Single player and multiplayer are like the original—multiplayer was always more interesting. In multiplayer you can smash buildings and go head-to-head to fight other monsters.

GRAPHICS: The graphics have been upgraded. The 3D environment is an upgrade, however nothing else is upgraded.

SOUND: The soundtrack is dull. The sound effects are generic.

FRANKLY: Rampage: Total Destruction is only $20. Even at such a low price it’s hard to recommend—even though the game includes the original versions of Rampage. The game could have been great.
