Rise of the Kasai

Rise of the Kasai
Game: Rise of the Kasai
Platform: PS2
Studio: Sony
Rating: 7/10

GAME STUDIO DESCRIPTION: Rise of the Kasai is the prequel and sequel to the highly acclaimed The Mark of Kri. The struggle to protect the dark magic of Kri from spreading returns, with four playable characters, each with their own menacing weapons and deadly combos. Unique collaborative gameplay pairs you with a fellow warrior, making teamwork essential as you scout, plan and fight your way through breathtaking 3-D environments. This time, the only way to preserve your future is to fight it.

PLAY: The controls are identical to the previous game The Mark of Kri. It worked then and it works well now. There are five combos for each weapon. The use of the spirit Kuzo as your eyes is a fantastic edition—seemingly out of the Beastmaster. He can see ahead and allows you to know what you are up against so you can take action in order to avoid being spotted.

The main principal is to try and go unnoticed however when you are its still fun to break out the weapons and take out a few dozen enemies. The AI is lacking. When faced with half a dozen guys it’s easy to take them all out with little fuss. You’ll be attacked one at a time while the others stand and watch. There are bosses who are like puzzles because once you figure out how to defeat them there really is no challenge after that.

The team fighting has pluses and minuses. It’s great to have someone fighting along with you as long as they are helping and not hindering the battle. The AI isn’t very well done so there are occasions when you can’t quite figure out what they are doing. On occasions you’ll be taking on the enemies alone—why? There are no answers.

GRAPHICS: The cutscenes look like movie scenes. The character design is well done and highly stylized. Thankfully there is plenty of detail on the backgrounds.

SOUND: The narration is wonderful. It’s important to have good narrators when the game invests so much in the story.

FRANKLY: Because of the issues with AI and the poor team play it’s hard to love Rise of the Kasai. It’s a wonderful looking game however it can’t make up for the 10 hour play time.
