Look: Nightmare Creatures II is creepy, even if it did feel like I was playing it on the PlayStation or maybe the old SNES. The graphics are subpar at best. I mean, how often do I have to find myself standing in the middle of the air even though I stepped off of a table or hospital bed? One time I was having it out with a zombie who knocked me into some black hole world where there was no way out. All I could do was hit reset. I found myself walking above the rest of the game, looking down yet unable to get back into the fight. And I wasn’t able to do it again. Glitch.
Most of the fight scenes were boring. You find nothing but lackluster spurts of blood on the floor and wall. Nothing could seem more unrealistic than getting your neck chewed on and finding there is no real destruction except to your damage meter.
Feel:
This game seems to be nothing more than dash and kill. Usually killing monsters is cool enough to make up for a lack of depth, but this one didn’t. Its just hack, kick, hack, hack, get bit, hack, and if you’re lucky, you move on. Nothing special. You’re completely limited in your fun and you quickly get bored. I was bored so often that I wondered if I had the enthusiasm to even finish the game.
Hear:
You’ll hear the occasional roar, the sound of rain, or the dripping from a leaky pipe. The Rob Zombie soundtrack is okay, but nothing compared to the games we’ve come to expect today.
Finally:
Nightmare Creatures II could have been a great game. Some games make it fun, even when there is a lot of repetition, especially if you may find something new and exciting each time through, but this limping mess of an ax toter, Herbert Wallace, is as boring as naptime. The game is as sloppy as its ax-wielding avenger. I’ve got the feeling that once you beat this game, you’ll be selling it on Ebay.
