Game Company’s Description: Solid Snake returns in Metal Gear Solid®2: Substance, the expanded edition of Metal Gear Solid®2: Sons of Liberty™ with all-new game modes, hidden characters and storylines. Top-secret weapons technology is being mysteriously transported under cover of an oil tanker to an unknown destination. It’s up to Snake to infiltrate the transport and keep this deadly weapon of mass destruction from falling into the wrong hands!
Look: Absolutely the best looking game on PS2. The opening sequences and movies throughout are amazing. You wish everyone could make a game to look like this. Every game since Metal Gear’s PS2 introduction have been held up to the beauty of this release.
Feel: The revolutionary stealth gameplay is still there and still feels wonderful. The non-substance version could have come out right now and still would have been better than most games today.
There is too much story and not enough gameplay. It feels more like a movie than a game. For gamers this might not bode well. We want to get our hands dirty and not sit and watch and wonder if we’ll ever get our chance to play.
There are a good amount of extras here, even if some are silly like the skateboarding mode. But all in all there is a huge amount of replay value. The missions are amazing and deep.
Hear: If you heard Metal Gear Solid 2 you know what Substance has to offer.
Frankly: Problem. It is certainly too short. And if you own the original release you might not be interested in shelling over half a Benjamin to get this. But if you haven’t jumped on the bandwagon the first time around then get it now!
