Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition
Game: Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition
Platform: PS2
Studio: Rockstar
Rating: 7/10

GAME STUDIO DESCRIPTION: Rockstar Games has joined forces with DUB Magazine, the authoritative source on automotive lifestyles, to redefine of the racing genre once again with Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition. The series that took racing from tracks to the open urban streets is back, and the stakes are even higher.

Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition delivers insanely fast, open city racing in Atlanta, San Diego, and Detroit, complete with 8-player online competition and the most comprehensive vehicle customization ever seen in a video game. Drive the hottest licensed real life SUVs, import tuners, muscle cars, choppers and luxury rides, and trick them out with the latest rims, trims, and upgrades just like in the pages of DUB.

Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition has more speed, more choices, and more chrome than any game has ever packed under the hood.

PLAY: Giant cityscapes are at your disposal. There is so much open-ended racing that you often wonder if you are wasting time or having a good time—more often than not you’re having a good time. MC3 is full of hidden areas waiting to be discovered.

The racing is what really matters. Most are checkpoint races. As the game goes on the checkpoints are harder to find and the computer knows all the shortcuts. It’s not unusual to race a half dozen times until you win a checkpoint race. MC3 is not Gran Turismo and the cars look good however the races are straight-out of cartoon-land. There are huge jumps and the crashes are made for Hollywood. Nothing about MC3 comes close to reality—perhaps that is why we liked it so much.

The cars are awesome. You can drive a Hummer H1 and H2, Cadillac, Dodge Viper, Kawasaki Ninja, Lamborghini, and even a West Coast Chopper! There are actually special moves for each vehicle, too. Your H1 and H2 can knock cars clear out of the highway.

Career mode is fulfilling as you start out as nobody trying to get props and more cars to add to your garage. Career mode has different types of races, checkpoint, from one place to another, and then timed races. You can also tune your cars. MC3 excels in the cool additions that can be given to your cars. There is some bling which allows you to make your car look cool but not necessarily move fast. The great thing about the career mode is the amount of playing time that is involved. You could play this for a month and still be messing with your cars.

GRAPHICS: The cities are well designed and have a great amount of detail. The cars look great and like the environments are extremely detailed—even when they crash.

SOUND: The soundtrack is top notch. The artists aren’t all hip-hop, which has been the norm with games like these. Along with hip-hop artists like The Game there are also cool rock bands like Kasabian, Nine Inch Nails, and Queens of the Stone Age.

FRANKLY: With online play and career mode there is a lot of replay value. This is a huge improvement over the last release. Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition is a must buy!
