X-Men Legends
Game: X-Men Legends
Platform: Xbox
Studio: Activision
Rating: 8/10

GAME STUDIO DESCRIPTION: The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants has freed their leader, the diabolically intelligent Magneto. An unprovoked attack on mutant-kind by a secret Sentinel army compels Magneto to plan his most maniacal scheme yet. He intends to use his mutant superpowers to shroud the Earth in cosmic debris, blotting out the sun and plunging the globe into eternal winter. From this chaos the Brotherhood will emerge to reign supreme over humankind. As the Sentinels continue to wage worldwide mutant genocide, the X-Men must confront Magneto and save the earth from certain destruction.
Penned by former X-Men writers and based on the Ultimate X-Men comic book series, X-Men Legends blends visceral superhero action, a dynamic experience system and a vivid, cinematic story into one of the most thrilling forays into the X-Men universe yet. Recruit your squad of 4 mutants from a team of 15—including Wolverine, Gambit, Nightcrawler and Storm—and battle evildoers across a vast, interactive, fully destructible landscape. Switch among squad members at will and use their unique abilities for puzzle-solving and combat. Upgrade your heroes’ abilities on the fly. Combine superpowers to unleash awesome mutant attacks that obliterate all obstacles and enemies in your path. Over 40 fully rendered cinematic sequences illustrate the cliffhanger plot and lead the X-Men into brutal confrontation with the greatest evil mutant-kind and humankind alike have ever faced.
GRAPHICS: The best graphics are the environments which are better to look at everytime when you smash them. The characters on the other hand aren’t close up but there is a reason—they aren’t well detailed. Anyone that owns a PS2 and Xbox—opt for the Xbox version. The PS2 suffers from terribly long load times while the Xbox has crisper details. The Gamecube falls right in the middle.

PLAY: You will be glad to find out that all your favorite X-Men are here: Cyclops, Iceman, Jean Grey, Storm, and Wolverine. They aren’t available to play at the same time but you can load them any time during game play. Each character has different abilities, but some are balanced better than others. The attack buttons are easy to master. Combos aren’t hard to put together and thankfully the mechanics are the games best features.

X-Men Legends is RPG/story based. The maps are sizable making for massive missions. The entire game can take upwards of 30 hours. Some missions take hours individually. Some of the maps could have been cut into half thus giving Legends a quicker pace without cutting down on its overall depth.

Health is extremely important because the levels are so vast. Gather them up or yo’ll regret it because there is no auto-save feature. So you may find yourself playing an hour or more and go to a flashback and die only to lose your life which will make you go back and lose another hour of your life.

You can unlock many well known enemies that you can play as Juggernaut, Havok, Marrow, Mystique, Pyro, and Sabretooth.

SOUND: The voice acting is okay. Sometimes you hear a voice and sometimes its text only. The score and sound effects round it out and are completely adequate. There was a chance for Legends to shine with great dialogue and a fantastic score, but they were ignored for the apparent need to make extremely long missions.

FRANKLY: All reviews are based upon opinions and X-Men Legends is no different. Players who like long games will feel they’ve got their money’s worth. However those who like well paced games might find X-Men Legends tedious. Honestly it’s somewhere in the middle. Some missions feel tedious while others keep you so involved that you hardly notice two hours have passed.
