Doom 3

Doom 3
Game: Doom 3
Platform: PC
Studio: Activision
Rating: 8.5/10

GAME STUDIO DESCRIPTION: DOOM 3 – id Software™’s terrifying battle with the forces of Hell. A massive demonic invasion has overwhelmed the UAC’s Mars Research Facility leaving only chaos and horror in its wake. As one of only a few survivors, you must struggle with shock, fear, and an all-out assault on your senses as you fight your way to Hell and back, in an epic clash against pure evil.

GRAPHICS: If there is any game worth buying for graphics alone it would be Doom 3. This is a visual masterpiece. The lighting is stunning. What is most brilliant is how frightening the visuals make the game. Have you ever wanted to be in a horror movie? Doom 3 does that and is scarier yet. The models, both human and monster, should be the benchmark for all games that come hereafter.

CONTROLS: Doom 3 doesn’t voyage beyond the usual FPS fare. There is a lot of searching—and it can get tedious. You move from room to room searching for items and then moving on and doing the same over and over again. Of course you do this in anticipation that there will be something to shoot. And there is.

The atmosphere makes your hands sweat with anticipation. There are some ups and downs with the AI. You can easily get soldiers to follow you only to meet their doom. It seems many enemies are ready to rush you only to meet a similar fate. Doom 3 is a lot of blasting and not a lot of strategizing. The real annoyance is going from flashlight to weapon. It’s tedious… how about this idea—put the flashlight on a helmet?

SOUND: Scared? You will be. Hook your system up to the right kind of sound, focus on your screen, and you’d believe that you were part of a horror movie. Some of the gun sounds are weak—but is it really worth complaining about? There are a lot of noises that creep you out. The monsters are scary enough to make playing late into the evening a real freak-out.

FRANKLY: Doom 3 is better than anticipated. Single player, depending on what level of difficulty you choose the first time, can draw you back for more. Multi-player is the cherry on top. Once the mods come out you’ll be playing this one for years. Doom 3 is the scariest and yet most beautiful game to date. If you want the crap scared out of you Doom 3 will do it.
