PLAY: Call of Duty 2 has wonderful vast and various campaigns. There is also a great library of weapons from different countries. You go from one extreme to another as you battle your way through in Italy, Germany, France, etc. One minute you might find yourself out in the open and another you are laying in a trench wondering if you’ll ever get out.
The enemies aren’t particularly hard to beat. The AI is lacking—sadly it is lacking on both sides. More than once we had to take the lead to kill enemies who were standing out in the open when we had members of our squad who could have easily shot them but either missed or didn’t take the shot.
Multiplayer mode consists of the usual; deathmatch, team deathmatch, capture the flag, and domination. Xbox online was much smoother than the PS2 online. A split screen would have enhanced multiplayer further.
GRAPHICS: The characters are very good. The vehicles are nicely detailed but the explosions are tops. The environments are impressive. Making your way through a country town at dusk is fantastic as the homes are lit. It makes for an eerie sense of warmth and hospitality while at any moment you could take a bullet.
SOUND: Discussions between squadmates are vital and we hear it all. When a bomb goes off your ears ring and you end up hitting the ground. The entire aural environment is extremely impressive.
FRANKLY: Eight hours is what it’ll take for a skilled gamer to finish the Big Red One. Another curious issue is the lack of a narrative. A story would have made us bond with the characters. Thankfully the gameplay outshines any negative.
