PLAY: For openers Advent Rising has one fantastic story that will encompass gamers. If you don’t care about storylines perhaps nearly a dozen cool guns will catch your attention.
Gideon’s mechanics are much like those found in Max Payne with the slow-mo ability to dodge. There is considerable depth to Advent Rising and thankfully they have stick control that works perfectly. “Flick Targeting” is the ability to flick the right stick towards your enemy and that will in turn send Gideon to attack. It takes some getting use to but once you have it mastered it’s a great addition.
Shooting can be done from the right or left hand. You are able to lock on an enemy making for a much better experience. Just don’t think you will overwhelm every enemy with your firepower. Each enemy has their own ability.
GRAPHICS: Right from the beginning there are framerate issues. The more enemies on screen the more everything slows down. On a positive note it doesn’t cause issues with shooting or gameplay—accept when it comes to you trying to react quickly and not getting the same responsiveness.
SOUND: The soundtrack is amazing. Advent Rising sounds like a huge Hollywood production. It’s absolutely astonishing to hear. The sound effects and voice acting are no less appreciated. Every aspect appeals to the ears.
FRANKLY: If only the entire game was as great as the soundtrack. So much of Advent Rising is brilliant and yet some is less than spectacular. If the framerate issues had been fixed this easily could have been a 9.5—instead it doesn’t quite reach such epic status.
