Company Line: When The Eagle Flies was Traffic’s swan song–and a Top 10-charting gold masterpiece for Winwood, Capaldi, Wood and Jamaican-born bassist Rosko Gee. The ambitious mini-suite “Dream Gerrard,” evocative “Graveyard People,” “Walking In The Wind,” “Memories Of A Rock ‘N Rolla,” groovy “Love” and soulful title track were a fitting finale to a brilliant journey.
The Good:
“Graveyard People” – This sets one somber mood.
“Walking in the Wind” – Powerful, must hear.
The Marginal:
“When The Eagles Flies” – It flutters around Winwood’s powerful vocals.
The Ugly:
“Dream Gerrard” – There is something bad about this wandering piece. Who thinks up these lyrics anyway?
Frankly: Steve Winwood lost a few members of the band and it put a lot on his shoulders. There are some twists and turns but Traffic finds their way through. The sad thing is that it seems most Traffic fans don’t even know this album exists.
