Chili, T-Boz, and Left Eye are back with the release of their third album, Fanmail. The album is dedicated to their fans. On the cd insert they have listed the names of fans that e-mailed their web site. I must confess that even before I listened to the album, I spent at least an hour feverishly looking through all the names hoping to find mine since I too e-mailed TLC but no luck.
As I listened to the album, I found that the sound was quite similar to that on their last album, CrazySexyCool. The production is phenomenal, but it carries the obvious mark of Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds. While the sound has been updated since their last album, much of the orchestration sounds like many of the albums that Babyface has produced. Super-producer Dallas Austin also makes his presence known through the ultra-clean vocals and crisp instrumentation. Babyface and Austin truly know how to make a top-ten album.
The downfall of the album will be the lyrics. The lyrics are not on the same level with the production. Most are elementary and simply annoying. Although they are sung well and are catchy, songs such as “Dear Lie”, “No Scrubs”, “Silly Ho”, and “Unpretty” are lyrically lacking. This is a great album; it’s easy to listen to and even easier to dance to, but if depth in lyrics is what you are looking for, then you had better look elsewhere.
