Tony C. and the Truth – Demonophonic truth

Corporate Line: Maybe you’ve been to upstate New York. Probably took at least a dip through the deep South. That’s Tony’s path; his story. A whiff of the Mississippi Delta, cold-filtered by way of the sticks north of NYC. Tony’s been there, lived there, of there. Twenty seven years of good, hard life, with an approving nod from the spirits of those who came before, who went to the crossroads and shook the devil to his very soul. As Tony puts it in his song “Who I Are,” “Disembodied voice, disenfranchised mind laying down rhymes transcending time. Cause I fought the demons and I wear the scars and who I am is who I are.” Ask about his influences and he’ll tell you that his father gave him G, C, and D chords at 9 and bought him an Elvis book at 10. Ask him why he has not quit smoking (Lucky Strikes, unfiltered) and he’ll tell you that his grandfather taught him that, “quitters never win.”

The Good:
“Who I Are” – I can’t believe this is a white guy singing – the soul, the terror, and the blues voice. Ouch.
“Good Lookin Out” – Blues with a rock tinge and a nasty hook–same goes for “Little Bit More”.
“Ain’t No Pain” – Old school rock that would make the Rolling Stones proud.

The Average:
“Weight Of The World” – Leans towards rock only not as interesting with the electronic sounds that seem out of place.
“Gravity” – Gritty, stripped down blues.
“Someday” – A combination of Blues and old school hip-hop that never seems to work right.

The Ugly:
“Fight For Your Right (To Party)” – Didn’t dig this Beastie Boys cover–surely a great live song to get the crowd rocking.

Frankly: There are some tracks that lean away from the blues and towards a heavier rock style that don’t fit Tony C. and when the group goes for an electronic, more hip style with scratches that feel out of touch. Tony C. has a great voice. You’d think that Muddy Waters came back as a white guy prepared to take over the world!
