Corporate Line: La Doña to Latin families is the equivalent of…The Godmother – she who has paved paths, laid foundations and lead by exalted example, pulling inspiration from the highest of culture to the most popular denominators. Up on all the history and down with all the trends, La Doña knows not only from where she came but also from where it all originated…and stays ahead of where it is all going.
The Good:
“My Body’s Hungry” – Sexy, sassy, and part of that Teena Marie that brought her to Motown as the first white artists signed to the label in the mid-1970s.
“A Rose By Any Other Name” f/Gerald Levert – This is a hot duet that sounds like its right out of the golden age of Motown.
The Average:
“I’m Still In Love” – Not the reason to rush out to buy the record.
“Off The Chain” f/Birdman – When Teena Marie goes from vintage to wanna-be hipster it goes south.
“High Yellow Girl” – Not great—but better than most of the weaker tracks that run throughout this record.
“Hit Me Where I Live” – The sax adds a nice jazz touch to this lounge act.
The Ugly:
“Baby I’m Your Fiend” – Dreadful.
Frankly: The press release says that a lot of this record was done before Teena Marie signed with Cash Money, but I find that hard to believe with songs like; “Off The Chain” and “Baby I’m Your Fiend.” These are songs straight out of the Cash Money crew. Teena Marie is attempting a comeback in a big way—perhaps another day.
